computers are the devil... and a contest
Ugh. The entire post that I just wrote completely disappeared and once again I cannot get pictures to show up properly. I really don't feel like writing everything again so I'll try to summarize for ya.
Apparently the shop launch did not go very well from a customer stand point, and for that I am very sorry. Our main concerns were to keep the site from crashing and to make sure that all payments made were secure. Those are taken care of so from now on we can concentrate on making the site easier to get to, easier to navigate, and just plain fun to visit. Mr.yarntini and I headed off on a much needed and very belated honeymoon to Paris next week so things will be quiet around here until the middle of August. I'm hoping to get some yarn up in the shop before we leave though so keep an eye out for that.
I really want to give away some yarn so although I'm terrible at coming up with contest ideas, here goes. In honor of tonight's book launch I'll make this one Harry Potter themed. All you have to do is tell me your favorite moment from the Harry Potter book series. I guess try to keep it contained to the first six books for now to avoid spoiling the new book for anyone. And if you haven't read the books, I'd love to know how you managed to not get sucked in! Everyone that comments will be entered to win some yarntini yarn and other goodies and to try to make up for any headaches, anyone that commented on the last post will be entered twice. Comments will be accepted through August 12th.
Have fun at any Harry Potter parties you may be attending tonight and enjoy the weekend!

i love in book 5 when the weasley twins make their grand exit. a great moment of comic relief in such a dark book.

So many choices! I always liked in the first book when Harry lets out the snake in the zoo before he knows he has any powers. I hope the snake enjoyed his freedom!

My favorite part is the Yule Ball in the 4th book. I love how jealous Ron is of Hermione!

Hi! I'm one of the few who haven't ready Harry Potter yet! But I love the movies, and I know the books are even better :) After book 7 comes out, I want to start reading book 1 and go through the whole set! I can't wait :)

Have a great trip!!! On of my favorite memories from Harry Potter was the magic Christmas party, I don't remember what book it was in.
Posted by: Christine | July 20, 2007 04:25 PM
I have not been sucked in and gosh, I don't know how. I think because it is more fantasy - I'm kind of straight up fiction kind of girl - even a little sci-fi - but no fantasy. I do have the first Potter book, I bought it with the idea I would "chapter read" with my daughter one day (um, I think she was an amoeba when I bought it) so maybe I should stick a toe in the water?
Paris? Wow - how fabulous! Much deserved and good to squeeze in any bonus together time before babytini shakes things up:)

I haven't read the books. My mom and sister are addicted. I don't really have time to read anymore. Too many crafty things and chores (ack!). Plus it's hard to find a quiet moment around the house.
I do like the movies. I guess my favorite part is when Harry finds out he's a wizard. It's a happy Cinderella-esk moment.
Posted by: Katie | July 20, 2007 05:47 PM
My favorite was Harry found out in one of the first books that his parents died saving him from the one that shall not be named. It was the part when Harry finds out how he got his scar and that Mom and Dad saved him through their unconditional love and willingness to sacrifice themselves for him. It was very touching.
Posted by: Marisol | July 20, 2007 06:08 PM
My favorite moment is when Harry finds out Sirius is his godfather. He'd always been so sad about his lack of parents, and Sirius filled part of that void.
Posted by: Davy | July 20, 2007 06:21 PM
I love the moment Harry arrives at Hogwarts. He's so amazed and finally has a place where he fits in and can be himself.
Posted by: Nell | July 20, 2007 07:12 PM
My favorite book is three and I love the end where they have to get into the whomping willow, finding out about Sirius, Harry's patronus, the whole turning back time thing. It was a great ending for the book!

MY favorite HP moment is a rather innocous one. In the 6th book when Dumbledore and Harry go to convince Slughorn to come to Hogwarts, Dumbledore goes to the restroom so Harry can talk to Slughorn. When he comes out, they ask him what took so long. Dumbledore says, "I was merely reading muggle magazines . . I do love knitting patterns." Fantastic!

Well, I have seen all the movies, but have not read the books. (ashamed) BUT, BUT, BUT.... I DID buy them all at Wally-world just a couple days ago. So, my fav part will be from the movie, if that still counts. I would have to say it is where Hermoine "decks" Malfoy in "Pisoner of Azkaban". Girl Power!! :)

A belated honeymoon in PARIS!!!! Oh.My.Word. That is my dream. Have lovely, wonderful and safe trip. Then I want to hear all about the lovely things you see and do!

I *adore* the sequence in the Shrieking Shack in Book 3-- that whole 75 page section is gripping, and touching, and heartbreaking all at once.
Yay for Book 7!
Posted by: courtney | July 20, 2007 09:01 PM
I loved all of the books but one of my favs is when Harry plays Quidditch for the first time. I have many more. Anything that has to do with the Weasley twins is normally a crack up.
Posted by: Trish | July 20, 2007 09:36 PM
I love when Ginny and Harry finally get together in book six. I'm hoping those two end up back together in book 7!
Posted by: Helena | July 20, 2007 10:34 PM
I loved the first book; in fact, I loved it so much that I was really sad when it was over...how long would I have to wait for the next book?
So I decided that I would read all of the books at once, after the publication of the last one. They are all neatly sitting in one of my bookcases (all purchased on the day of their release) and now I can have a month-long (or much longer) Harry marathon!
Hope you and Mr. Yarntini have a fabulous time in Paris!
Posted by: Wendy in Cambridge | July 20, 2007 11:11 PM
My favorite is in the first book when they are trying to retrieve the philosopher's stone. I love how they all work together and contribute their own strengths to making it through the challenges/obstacles.
Posted by: Amanfa | July 21, 2007 08:31 AM
Sorry, I've never read the books! My oldest is 6, so I'm sure in the coming years, we'll be reading them together!
Posted by: Michelle | July 21, 2007 08:46 AM
I have the same favorite knitting related Harry Potter Moment - moment that Femiknitter did as well. It was chapter 4 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Chapter titled "Horace Slughorn".
Dumbledore told Harry and Slughorn he needed to use the bathroom. He was gone for quite some time Dumbledore "Oh there are you are, Albus," he said(slughorn) "You've been a very long time. Upset stomach?"
"No, I was merely reading the Muggle magazines," said Dumbledore. "I do love the knitting patterns. Well, Harry, we have trespassed upon Horace's hospitality quite long enough; I think it is time for us to leave."
Sure there are many, many more memorable moments but as a knitter, this one little reference to muggle knitters thrilled me!

I have not been sucked in - partly I think because my guys were already into series when it started, and just didn't catch the fever. And I am a fan of so many adult series (Anne Rice, etc.), I just couldn't get into something else...
Posted by: Karin | July 21, 2007 09:43 AM
I have ALMOST read the books many times. I'm going to sound worse than my teenager here, but-there are so many pages! I know a couple of people - not kids - who LOVE the books. I want to see if I would like the books better than the movies, but that will really cut into my sock knitting time.
Posted by: sharon | July 21, 2007 10:31 AM
are you kidding? pick just one? this will require some in depth research and comparison, days of deep meditation and then some reading. but if you MUST make me pick, i suppose i would choose any scene in the weasley household, especially when harry first visits.
happy belated honeymoon!!

I love the moment in Half Blood Prince when Harry realizes he's in love with Ginny - a moment that will last a lifetime.
I want to add a comment on the varigated yarn - I really wanted port and I did managed to get port. I bought maraschino for a friend (as I didn't think it was my colour), when it arrived it was the most sumptious colour of cherry cordial, needless to say I am keeping it for myself. If anyone thought about ordering it and didn't you should have.
Have a wonderful time in my 3rd favorite city in the world.
Posted by: Isobel | July 21, 2007 11:58 AM
Yes, I feel like the only person on earth who has not been affected by the craze! I have seen a few of the movies and have enjoyed them. I think now that the last book is out I will try to read the whole series back to back.
Have a wonderful time in Paris! I'm so jealous!
Posted by: Emily | July 21, 2007 12:05 PM
First, I want to wish you lots of fun and lovely moments in your honeymoon.
My favorite part, well, I am bad with remembering book parts but I can tell you which scene has stayed with me from the movies. When Cedric died and his dad came to him and said "my boy, my boy", my heart always breaks when I see this scene, maybe it is because I have a son and I can feel the pain and the anguish.
Have a wonderful time in Paris.
Hey, any chance of sending a mass email when the next update is up :). Don't want to miss it.
Posted by: isela | July 21, 2007 12:18 PM
I've read the first two books, but they didn't really suck me in. I've read too many other good books, I guess, and the Harry Potter books didn't live up to the hype for me. I can't even think of a favourite moment.
Have a great time in Paris!
Posted by: Nicole | July 21, 2007 12:23 PM
Watching the first movie now while I wait for my delivery of book 7 from amazon.com.
I loved so much - the Weasley twins exit from school, Dudley getting a piggy tail in the first book, the whole finding out he was a wizard thing...
For the purposes of this, though, my favorite scene is where Umbridge gets "attacked" by the centaurs. She was written so well that I loved to see her get what was coming to her. :)
Posted by: Kara | July 21, 2007 01:20 PM
Well, I'm one of those who hasn't read one Harry Potter book. I guess it's due to the fact that I've read too many other books due to studies. Now I have two small children, still only one year and another almost three, but I guess I'm probably in the risk zone. And I think it's ok ;)$
Posted by: Elena | July 21, 2007 02:40 PM
I didn't get sucked into the hype of Harry Potter, read the synopsis of the first book when it came out in the bookstore and completely dismissed it.
I did buy the Harry Potter movies for niece and have watched them with her.
Posted by: Melissa | July 21, 2007 05:15 PM
I have read all of the books but there are so many great moments. I think I still like the first book the best. I enjoyed reading how Harry discovers his new world.
Posted by: colleen | July 21, 2007 05:28 PM
My favorite moment was when the Fred and George sent fireworks throughout the school to protest Umbridge.
Posted by: Jennifer | July 21, 2007 05:44 PM
I love the part in Book 4 when they are at the Quidditch World Cup. I love all the activity, the magical items, the game, the whole spectacle of it. It's such a fun set of scenes--at least until the Death Eaters show up!
Posted by: Emma | July 21, 2007 07:21 PM
um, i've never read harry potter. i just wanted to say hang in there with your shop! you'll find a way to make it run smoothly :). oh my gosh, have a fabulous honeymoon!!! paris is such a beautiful, romantic place.

I like the part in the second? book where the two boys get trapped in the car with the giant spiders surrounding them. ;op
Posted by: Noriko | July 22, 2007 12:47 AM
I've already read the new book and it's a wonderful read!
[SPOILER]!!!!!
My favourite part in the books is when he goes back into Snapes memory is Deathy Hallows and you see so much about Lily & Snape
Posted by: KnittingHawkeye | July 22, 2007 01:10 AM
I have to go with the first poster and agree that the Weasley's exit from Hogwart's was the best. That combined with all the other pranks they were playing prior to it. It was just so great to see them get back at Umbridge after you spend the book loathing her so much!
Posted by: Thayer | July 22, 2007 02:04 AM
I am one of those lonely soles who haven't read the books but have watched most of the movies. I will break down and buy the books one day...maybe my boys who are 5 and 4 get into the whole "Harry Potter" hype they will want the books...who knows.
Have a great time in Paris. I live in Germany and Europe is really pretty in the Spring and Summer but for some reason we are having alot of rain. I don't know about Paris but just to be safe bring an umbrella and a little raincoat :)
Posted by: Heather | July 22, 2007 02:18 AM
My favorite moment was in the Order of the Phoenix, when George and Fred created a huge ruckus, and left Hogwarts to start their joke shop. These to guys are my favorite characters and I loved the mess they left for Umbridge to clean up, also how the other professors pretended not to know how to help her. I like any mention of the twins but that is absolutely the best appearance they make in the series so far:) (I haven't read latest book yet).
Posted by: Robin | July 22, 2007 04:58 PM
i liked it when harry was locked in the closet/under the stairs in the first book. i've not read any of the books. tried to read the first on once or twice, but simply could not connect with it or its characters. so now it's a point of pride that i'm not an HP maniac.
Posted by: rebecca | July 23, 2007 02:33 PM
I have never read any of the books or seen any of the movies. I am interested, though. I just borrowed the first book from a good friend of mine and plan on getting to it sometime soon. I even took a Children's Literature class this past quarter and - yes! - I was the only person in the class who had never read or seen the books or the movies. I usually try to wait until the mania dies down when things get that popular. So here I am, never read or seen. I know - FREAK! ;)

Hope you're enjoying (/enjoyed) your belated honeymoon!
The first moment that comes to mind as my favorite is when Harry, in a stroke of brilliance, frees Dobby from the Malfoys.
Have you finished the last book? Dobby in that one...I cried. It was the only scene I actually cried at, although I was feeling rather somber toward the end.

Ginny kissing Harry in the common room after the Gryffindors won! My heart bubbled over. =)

I think that my favorite scene is one in the cafeteria with the candles floating everywhere and the ceiling covered in the stars. I just found it magnificent.
Posted by: Valerie | July 24, 2007 08:40 AM
I don't have one favorite scene. I loved the first book for the fantastic imagination of the author and for the introduction to the world of wizards.

Hey,
In the first book, on Harry's very first visit to Diagon Alley, all the sites and sounds described and this introduction to a whole new world!
Enjoy Paris, it's a mesmeric city.

I am sad to say that I have not read the series. I purchased the first book that came out then began having children. My daily reading habit has nearly vanished now. I still have the book and am plan on reading them when I get more time. I have obviously been missing something great!
Posted by: Amanda Clemons | July 24, 2007 12:33 PM
I haven't gotten the 7th book yet so I'm trying not to look at the other comments, just in case! I like all the descriptions of the funny foods, in all the books. Like pumpkin juice, that sounds interesting. Also, the dragon fighting scene was neat.
Posted by: Rachel | July 24, 2007 03:21 PM
Well, I just finished reading the sixth book today. I would have to say that my fav part is when Harry finally gets the guts to kiss Ginny! I got all nervous and excited like a dork! I can't wait until the movie comes out!:o)
Have a safe and wonderful trip in Paris! How exciting!!

When Harry and Ginny kiss in the Gryffindor common room...I was so happy I think I said "Yay" outloud! Have a fabulous time in Paris!
Posted by: Carrie | July 25, 2007 01:20 AM
I have so many favorite moments, but I loved the Quidditch finals at the beginning of The Goblet of Fire. It was cool to see what the wizard world was like outside of Hogwarts. And she introduced all kinds of new stuff, like the tent that's bigger on the inside than that outside.
Posted by: betsy | July 25, 2007 08:22 AM
Just one moment?? Well I really loved all the little moments of Hermione's knitting for the house elves. I was so bummed that it wasn't in the movie!!! I also really loved reading about the cafeteria ceiling in the first book. I loved how she describes things and I get such a vivid mental picture of it all. LOVE THEM! I'm just starting the 7th now that my daughter has finished it. Woohoo!
Posted by: Stephanie | July 25, 2007 01:35 PM
Never read one of them but have enjoyed the movies. Saw the movie first and loved it, I was afraid that the book wouldn't live up to the movie. Silly, now that I say that out loud.
I may read something other than knitting, someday.
I love your colorways. Do not knit socks though.
See, still far behind the times and out of sync with the rest of the world....
Hope you have a great time in Paris and a healthy baby.

Well, I'm all kinds of late to the party (I've seen the movies, but only just last week started reading the books). I'm halfway through the second book, though, and so far, it's the degnoming scene at the Weasley's house. Dang, what I wouldn't give to see that in person! :-)
Posted by: Heather | July 25, 2007 05:50 PM
There are a thousand scenes from the books I love, but the most touching for me is in book 1, when in the Mirror of Erised he sees what he watns more than anything, his parents.
Posted by: karen | July 25, 2007 06:07 PM
how have I avoided the books you ask... because I watch the movies and have a policy that either I read all the books and then watch all the movies or I see all the movies and then read all the books. One or the other but no mixing :)
That said I love watching Hermoine slag off Malfoy.
Posted by: stinkerbell | July 25, 2007 10:03 PM
I have no idea how I haven't gotten sucked in, except I don't see many movies (mainly documentaries) and read mostly non-fiction!
Posted by: Suzie | July 25, 2007 10:53 PM
Hmmmm, hard to pick a favourite part, but I guess I would say the first time Harry got on his broomstick to play Quidditch. Maybe it's because my favourite dreams are about flying?!?
Posted by: Jennifer | July 26, 2007 04:51 PM
Well... for one thing, I don't like fiction. I also don't like books that are meant for 11 year-olds. But I think the most important thing for me is that I don't follow the lemmings. I'm my own woman, and I do what my inner drummer leads me to do. Whatever that is is usually not the "popular" thing, the trendy thing, the thing that people line up overnight for, but rather the creative spark that ignites and gets the fire within burning so bright that I have no choice but to heed its call. I know that sounds kind of goofy, but I've always lived my life that way, and its served me well. And now, with 50 staring me in the face next year and rapidly failing health, I'm glad I've done it. I don't know if my disease will take me soon, but if it does, at least I've done the things I want to do, not the things that everyone else has done. And I've got one hell of a stash to show for it . My stash gives me comfort for some strange reason, and it's almost a mission to keep feeding it. More yarn? You bet! Thanks for listening to me blather.

My favourite moment is when Harry asks Dumbledore what he sees when he looks in the mirror of erised and Dumbledore says he sees himself holding handknitted socks.
Posted by: Daisy | July 27, 2007 09:26 AM
I love how intelligently written the books are. Even though the initial audience for the books was pre-teen, JK Rowling didn't write down to them. And I love the fact that kids are lining up around the block to read a 500-700 page book!
Anyways, I think my favorite book has to be book 5, The Order of the Phoenix. Professor Umbridge really makes my hubby's skin crawl, so if I want to make him twist up I just have to say "hem-hem!"
Posted by: Teenuh | July 27, 2007 11:07 AM
I haven't read the books but if movie moments count then my favorite is Hagrid arriving with the sat-upon birthday cake for Harry and of course the following comeuppance of Aunt, Uncle and Cousin.
Posted by: Julie | July 30, 2007 06:06 AM
Congrats on the honeymoon... Enjoy it!
I love the moment Harry arrives at Hogwarts. He's so full of awe and wonder - and finally has a place where he fits in and can be himself.
Posted by: Natalie | July 31, 2007 10:00 AM
I've thought about reading the Harry Potter books, but just haven't found the time to pick them up. I'm more drawn to non-fiction, and since I have very little time to read, I tend to choose something from that genre. I love the movies though!
Posted by: Lynn | August 1, 2007 11:41 AM
My favorite part in the Harry Potter series is in the first book when Hagrid wishes Harry Happy Birthday and brings Harry a birthday cake. He never had something as simple as having his family wish him Happy Birthday.
Posted by: Stacey | August 3, 2007 12:03 PM
Hey Jess!
There are so many! I loved anything to do with Luna - especially when she does the commentary for the Quidditch game. Other moments include when the twins leave school, the World Cup and the magical community attempting to dress like muggles, and Lupin teaching the class to fight the boggart.
Lastly my absolute fav moment of all is a conversation in Deathly Hallows - so of course I can't mention it here!
Posted by: Brooklyn | August 3, 2007 11:41 PM
My favorite moment has to be in Half Blood Prince, in the chapter entitled "Spinner's End" (that whole chapter is a masterwork in and of itself). Snape makes the Unbreakable Vow, and the third tongue of flame binds Bellatrix, Narcissa, and Snape "like a rope, like a fiery snake."
God, just...god.

I honestly don't remember a lot on specific since I read them from loaning from the library... but I remember I really like the 6th book on when Harry went with Dumbledore to the lake to get the horcrux.
I cannot wait for the movie next year!

i have to admit that my favourite moment was when dobby was freed from his "service" to the malfoy's too.
